Towards the end of the apprenticeship the employer
will receive a letter from the State Training Authority reminding
the employer that the learner is near completion. This letter is
confirmed and signed by the employer and returned to the State Training
Authority. The employer and learner will have to submit evidence
of successful completion of the the qualification i.e. a copy of
the certificate from the training organisation or the final TAFE
course results which state that the apprentice is eligible to receive
a TAFE certificate.
Australian Apprentices who successfully complete
both on-the-job and off-the-job training are issued a Certificate
of Proficiency from DET. The Certificate of Proficiency means that
the person is qualified in all aspects of their vocation, has completed
all training, is fully qualified and is entitled to be paid at the
full rate under the appropriate industrial arrangement. Apprentices
who want to apply for a licence to work in a licensed industry (eg
electricians) need a Certificate of Proficiency as proof of completion
of the trade qualification. The Commonwealth completion incentive
(where applicable) can only be claimed when the Certificate of Proficiency
has been issued.
Australian Apprentices who complete their on-the-job
training but have not completed their off-the-job training are issued
a Craft Certificate. When they complete their off-the-job training,
the apprentice or trainee can apply for a Certificate of Proficiency.
An employer who wishes to terminate the employment
of an apprentice at the completion of their training must give them
advance notice prior to the completion date in accordance with the
relevant industrial arrangement. After the completion date expires,
apprentices are deemed to be permanent employees.
